Abbarsjön/Abborsjön

Per Fredrik Gradin was born on 21 March 1910 by Abbarsjön ('Abborsjön' on the map, 'The Perch Lake'), in Ytterlännäs parish, Ångermanland. He lived for most of his life on the "Ytterlännäs mountain" and died on 4 November 1982.

In his younger days he learned from a family of Saami (Lapps) how to make brooms from heath twigs. "They were soft but strong, so they were very popular and we were very happy when the Lapps came and sold their brooms."

In the film Pelle talks himself and shows how they found the twigs and 'rushes' or 'ropes' for the binding, how they prepared the twigs and bound the broom.

He says, "that he wanted to show this for future generations so they know how to do it, otherwise the art will die out, of course".

The film was recorded in 1979 at the village museum in Forsed, Ytterlännäs, by the brothers Torsten and Gösta Melin from Nordanåker in Ytterlännäs.
